Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures, or asanas, that are held for longer periods compared to other yoga practices. Here are the key attributes of yin yoga:
1. Longer Holds: Practitioners typically hold positions for three to five minutes, or even longer. This time helps apply moderate stress to connective tissues—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—aiming to increase circulation in the joints and improve flexibility.
2. Meditative Approach: The practice is designed to cultivate inner silence and deepen awareness of the body and mind. The longer duration of asanas encourages mindfulness and introspection.
3. Targeting Deep Tissues: Yin yoga works beneath the muscle layer to target deeper tissues, complementing dynamic exercises that focus on muscle strength and stamina.
4. Rooted in Tradition: With ancient origins, yin yoga incorporates traditional Chinese medicine principles, stimulating the subtle body's channels or meridians, which are also targeted in acupuncture and other Asian medicine forms.
5. Accessory Use: Props such as blocks, bolsters, and blankets support the body during long holds, catering to diverse flexibility levels and making the practice accessible to everyone.
6. Balance and Complement: It complements more strenuous yang styles of yoga and other high-intensity exercises, creating a balanced routine that incorporates strength and flexibility.
7. Improves Energy Flow: The practice emphasizes the body's energy flow, believed to influence individual well-being.
Come learn all about this incredibly powerful practice and how to teach it in a way that maximizes your students‘ health and healing goals.
